Iconic New Roundshot Location in Seattle, WA

January 27, 2015

As part of its 50-year Jubilee anniversary, the Space Needle in Seattle, WA announces the installation of a Roundshot Livecam D2 perched at the pinnacle of the iconic 605-foot structure, with commanding views of the Seattle city skyline, Puget Sound, Mt. Rainier and Baker, the Cascade range and beyond.

The camera installation required a complex feat of structural engineering, involving the design of a specialized mounting platform enabling the camera to be placed over the existing navigation light.  The goal was to provide an unobstructed 360-degree view while not compromising the historic silhouette of the 50-foot mast, once fitted with a natural-gas flame head to commemorate the 1962 World's Fair.

The Space Needle facilities team is no stranger to heights and high winds, both skills being tested during this not-for-the-faint-of-heart task as the camera equipment is lifted to the top of the 605-foot tower mast for image testing.

The Space Needle is known for its innovative visitor experience, with an array of stunning digital and photographic exhibits including highly interactive video walls, user-controlled cameras and immersive augmented reality displays using the guest's smartphone.  Adding the Roundshot Livecam now provides people the world over 24-hour real-time views of Seattle and its surrounds from the tower as if there in person.

As a member of the Federation of Great Towers, the Space Needle enjoys peerage among an international group of 28 famous tower structures including 360 Chicago and The Willis Tower in Chicago, The Empire State Building in New York City and The Prudential in Boston.

PanoAlpin and Seitz are very proud to have been selected to provide this innovative technology and we are looking forward to years of beautiful ultra high-definition images from this amazing venue.
